  • Atlanta Medical Center

    The mission of Atlanta Medical Center is to provide primary and secondary care to residents of the community in which we are located, and to provide tertiary care to a large geographic area with an emphasis on the southern crescent of Atlanta.

    Our goals are:

    • To be totally patient-focused;

    • To have courteous, responsive and helpful employees;

    • To have a well groomed, clean and neat staff;

    • To provide a comfortable, safe and clean facility;

    • To have processes in place that accommodate smooth and efficient service; and

    To have things done timely, promptly and for the cost of care to be reasonable.

    Atlanta Medical Center began its service to the Atlanta community on Thanksgiving Day in 1901 as Georgia Baptist Medical Center. Located in a downtown five-room cottage, the infirmary had two patients, one doctor, and a few churchwomen serving as nurses. Nearly a century has gone by and today the medical center has grown into a 460-bed tertiary facility that is sprawled across two city blocks.

    Our services include a 30-bed neonatal intensive care unit, the Atlanta Cancer Center, the Atlanta Rehabilitation Center, three medical office buildings, the Wellness Center which provides a multidisciplinary approach to health and wellness, the Graduate Medical Education Program, and areas of medical excellence that provide care in advanced surgery, cardiology, oncology, neurology, women's health, orthopaedics, and trauma.

    As time has passed, many advancements in medical care have occurred. However, one thing has remained the same - caring and compassion for each patient and family. This has been the strength of our long life here in Atlanta.

    Our web site has important information about the services we offer. If you have any questions about any of them, please call the appropriate extension if listed or the main hospital number for assistance.

    Thank you for choosing Atlanta Medical Center. We look forward to providing extraordinary service to you and your family.

    Patient Safety

    Fall Prevention
    We are committed to providing a safe environment for our patients during their hospital stay. Part of having a safe environment is the prevention of falls. Certain situations can put a patient at a higher risk for falls, such as having a history of falling, confusion, weakness, visual problems, difficulty walking or taking certain medications. If you are in the hospital for a heart condition or a neurological condition, such as a stroke or seizures, you also may be at risk for falls. You can help prevent falls by doing the following things:

    • Let our staff know when you need assistance.
    • Ask a friend or family member to stay with you.
    • Wear non-skid shoes or slippers that fit well.
    • Keep your call bell, phone and other needed things within your reach.
    • Keep the path clear to the bathroom, and do not go alone when you are weak or dizzy.
    • Keep your bed and chair at the lowest height for you.

    Restraints
    Restrains may be needed in some situations to protect you or limit your movement during or after a procedure or surgery. Patients who may need restraints are those who are older, on multiple medications, are confused or have psychiatric conditions. Restraints may be physical, such as a belt, vest or cloth band, or chemical such as medication to calm or relax you when you may hurt yourself or others. You can help us reduce the need for restrains by:

    • Having someone stay with you.
    • Keeping items you need within reach.
    • Using your call bell when you need assistance.

It introduces a series of targeted initiatives in the areas of quality of care and patient safety, nursing practice, medical staff governance and other important areas related to patient care.

    Commitment to Quality consists of a comprehensive set of initiatives that address issues surrounding patient safety and reporting, physician excellence, nursing excellence and patient throughput.

    Patient Safety & Reporting Results

    The Patient Safety & Reporting Results initiative is designed to leverage systems and management leadership to improve the safety of clinical care for patients and build programs to support the same. This initiative also focuses on improving reporting systems in our hospitals, as well as improving processes for communicating performance results.

    Physician Excellence

    The Physician Excellence initiative focuses on designing and implementing a set of standard policies and procedures for governing hospital medical staff. This initiative is designed to provide a consistent model of governance and medical staff structure that supports quality of care, patient safety and documentation of physician excellence.

    St. Josephs Atlanta

    Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880, Saint Joseph's facility is Atlanta's oldest hospital. Today, the 410-bed, acute-care facility is recognized as one of the top specialty-referral hospitals in the Southeast.

    Saint Joseph's Hospital is a leader among Georgia health-care providers, respected for its expertise, innovation in health-care delivery and quality of care. While discussions of health frequently focus on competition and managed costs, Saint Joseph's has not lost sight of the people behind the numbers or its mission to serve those most in need. A commitment to the community is deeply rooted in its history .

    As a leader in cardiac, neurologic, vascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, orthopaedic and cancer care, among others, Saint Joseph's offers its patients the latest procedures and treatments by providing its medical staff, comprised of more than 750 physicians, with research services and the most advanced technology available.

    In addition to serving the metro-Atlanta area, patients come from all over Georgia and nearby states because of Saint Joseph's specialized services, excellent reputation and unique patient experience. In fact, Sain't Joseph's is Georgia's only hospital to have received the Top 50 Hospitals USA designation.

    As a result of its medical excellence, compassionate care and cost-effectiveness, Saint Joseph's has received numerous awards including the distinguished Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center; a designation of best in Georgia and top five percent in the nation for cardiac and vascular programs; and Solucient's list of 100 Top Hospitals in the country for cardiac and orthopaedic care. Saint Joseph's is the only Atlanta hospital named to J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program for Service Excellence.

    Mercy Care Services

    Saint Joseph's is deeply committed to its original mission of providing compassionate care to those who can least afford it. Saint Joseph's Mercy Care Services provides primary health care, education and social services to thousands of Atlanta's underserved population each year through two free-standing healthcare clinics (Mercy Clinic Downtown on Decatur Street and Mercy Clinic North located in the Northeast Shopping Plaza on Buford Highway), as well as a mobile clinic and five vans at nearly 20 sites throughout metro Atlanta.

    Mercy Care Services also operates Mercy Senior Care in Rome, Georgia providing needed services to elderly and disabled adults, personal support services, respite care and employment training. Mercy Care Services has been twice recognized with the Catherine McAuley Award, is a recipient of the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation Managing for Excellence Award (1996) and in 1998 was recognized with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.

    Respect and Dignity for All
    Saint Joseph's is committed to responding to each patient's total needs--physically, emotional, socially and spiritually. Patient care management, counseling, pastoral care, specialized support groups, education and social services are all considered integral components to the care that is provided.

    Patient Satisfaction
    Saint Joseph's scores are consistently higher than the national average and rank in the 95 percentile of surveyed hospitals throughout the country regarding overall quality of care and services.

    Community Service
    Each year, Saint Joseph's provides $37 million annually in charitable and uncompensated care for Atlanta's poor and elderly. In addition, Saint Joseph's Mercy Foundation raises an additional $7 million each year to respond to the medical needs of those patients least able to pay. Saint Joseph's employees contribute to the community as well through various organized projects. Raise the Roof is a joint effort between Saint Joseph's and Charis building homes for needy families. One in the Spirit is the annual employee fund raising campaign which raises money for the community and Mercy Day is an organized effort to help buy hygiene kits for the homeless which are distributed in honor of the Sisters of Mercy and their mission.

    Saint Joseph's seeks to provide a positive experience to all who enter our doors, patients and visitors alike. Helping you find your way around is an important part of this effort. Look for volunteers staffing the service desk on the main floor and at various locations throughout the hospital, as well as in the medical office buildings on campus. They are happy to assist you.

    The Saint Joseph's campus encompasses the main hospital, The Cancer Center, Stella Maris Outpatient Center and four medical office buildings: 5667, 5669, 5671 and 5673 Peachtree Dunwoody Road.

    There are several parking options. If you are coming to the hospital, or the Cancer or Outpatient Centers, park in the lot directly across from the hospital (on the other side of the access road) and a shuttle will take you to the front door of the appropriate building. Additional parking is available in lots adjacent to the 5667-71 medical office buildings fronting Peachtree Dunwoody Road and connected to the 5673 building next to the Peachtree-Dunwoody MARTA station.
